Glow in the Dark Glue

glow in the dark glue

Glow in the dark glue is one of the latest hot glues to hit the craft scene. Adding this glow-in-the-dark glue to your craft supplies makes everything you make look extra special!

This glue is also washable and non-toxic, making it safe for kids to play with as well. It’s perfect for gluing on neon stickers, decorating trick-or-treating bags, and even using as a stencil in art projects!

Learn About Luminescence

A lot of the toys and decorations you’ve seen glow in the dark, such as the stars on the ceiling, have luminescent properties. These glow-in-the-dark products contain substances called phosphors that absorb light energy from the sun or other bright source and then emit it as a glow. These phosphors are found in two common types of phosphorescent materials: zinc sulfide and strontium aluminate.

Generally, most glow-in-the-dark toys use these phosphors. They’re energized by normal light, and they have a very long persistence (the length of time that they glow).

Phosphors are made up of molecules or atoms that absorb energy in the visible and ultraviolet wavelengths. Then, the phosphors emit this light as a “glow.” It’s not just glow sticks or plastic constellation kits that have these phosphors — everything from flashlights to computer screens is made with these materials.

Why Do Things Glow in the Dark?

Glow in the dark items are typically coloured green because the human eye is more sensitive to green light than it is to red or blue light. This makes it easier for us to see them when they’re placed in a dark room.

There are other kinds of luminescence, though, too! Chemiluminescence and radioluminescence can also make things glow in the dark.

Chemiluminescence is the process by which a substance glows when exposed to a chemical reaction that excited the electrons inside. This process can take place inside a living cell or a nonliving object like a glow stick.

This is similar to how glow-in-the-dark paint works. The paint carries luminescent phosphors that soak up the energy from invisible UV rays from the sun and then reflect it when it gets dark.

For this reason, glow in the dark paint usually has to be left in a very bright room for a while before it can start glowing. Older glow in the dark toys will only glow very weakly, but newer ones have better phosphors that will glow for longer periods of time.

Luminescent paint can be found in most craft stores or in the crafting section of many major retail stores. You can also make your own by mixing a small amount of this glow-in-the-dark paint into a container of white glue.

Add a drop of green food coloring to the glue and mix thoroughly. Once the glue is mixed, fill your measuring cup about three-quarters of the way full with starch and stir it into the glue mixture.

If you need to add more starch, simply mix a little more into the glue until it has “gelled.” After that, your slime will be ready to play with!
